Who Can Inject in Tennessee?

In Tennessee, Botox and dermal filler treatments are regulated injectable procedures. Eligible providers generally need the correct healthcare license, proper training, and authority to perform the treatment within their scope of practice. Tennessee also places limits on where these injections may be performed and prohibits authorized injectors from delegating Botox or filler injections to people who are not allowed to perform them.

Here is a breakdown of the eligible medical professionals and their Tennessee state requirements:
Profession
Eligibility
Tennessee State Requirements
Dentists (DDS / DMD)
Eligible
May administer Botox, other FDA-approved neurotoxins, and dermal fillers when treatment involves the oral cavity, maxillofacial area, or adjacent and associated structures and is within the dentist’s education, training, and experience. Tennessee’s Board of Dentistry directs dentists to Attorney General Opinion 14-51 for guidance on these procedures.
Physicians (MD / DO)
Eligible
May evaluate, prescribe, and perform Botox and dermal filler procedures when appropriately trained and acting within their professional scope. Tennessee facilities operating as medical spas must meet state registration requirements, and the supervising medical director must be an actively licensed Tennessee MD or DO with an active medical practice in the state.
Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN / NP)
Eligible
May perform aesthetic injectable procedures when the treatment falls within the APRN’s education, competence, scope of practice, and applicable prescribing authority. Tennessee nurse practitioners with prescriptive authority practice under the state’s applicable physician-collaboration requirements.
Physician Assistants (PA)
Eligible
May perform medical treatments, including procedures within their competence and training, when permitted under their protocol or collaborative agreement and within the usual scope of practice of the collaborating physician.
Registered Nurses (RN)
Eligible
May administer prescribed medications and treatments, including delegated cosmetic injections, when appropriately trained and acting under a valid order and within nursing scope. RNs do not independently diagnose, prescribe, or develop the medical treatment plan.
Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN)
Eligible
Tennessee defines practical nursing to include carrying out medical orders under the direction of a licensed physician, dentist, or registered nurse. However, current Board guidance does not specifically provide a blanket authorization for LPNs to perform Botox or dermal filler procedures, so the individual procedure, training, supervision, and practice setting should be confirmed with the Tennessee Board of Nursing.
Aestheticians / Cosmetologists
Not Eligible
An aesthetics or cosmetology license alone does not authorize Botox or dermal filler injections. Tennessee defines cosmetic medical services separately from ordinary aesthetic services, and even procedures capable of altering living tissue can fall outside the aesthetics scope.
Medical Assistants / Unlicensed Individuals
Not Eligible
Medical assistants and unlicensed personnel should not independently perform Botox or dermal filler injections. Tennessee law specifically prohibits delegation to certified medical assistants of medications used for cosmetic procedures, including botulinum toxin and fillers.
(State requirements are subject to change. Always verify current regulations with your respective Tennessee licensing board).

What Kind of Training is Required for Botox Certification in Tennessee?

In Tennessee, Botox training is especially important because injectable treatments fall within regulated medical or dental practice rather than ordinary cosmetic services. Providers need appropriate education, clinical competency, and authority under their professional license before performing neuromodulator or dermal filler procedures. Tennessee also regulates facilities that qualify as medical spas.

A strong Tennessee Botox training course should cover facial anatomy, patient evaluation, indications and contraindications, neuromodulator and filler pharmacology, product preparation, injection technique, informed consent, documentation, complication management, and infection control. Hands-on training is especially valuable because injectables require clinical judgment, anatomical knowledge, and precision in real treatment settings.

Training and practice requirements can also vary by provider type. Tennessee specifically recognizes that properly trained dentists may perform Botox, other FDA-approved neurotoxins, and dermal filler procedures within areas covered by the practice of dentistry. Physicians, APRNs, PAs, nurses, and other licensed professionals must remain within the scope, supervision, prescribing, and delegation requirements applicable to their individual licenses and practice settings.

For Tennessee providers, the goal is not simply to receive a Botox training certificate. The goal is to develop the clinical knowledge and hands-on skills needed to provide injectable treatments safely while remaining within Tennessee scope-of-practice and facility requirements. Providers should verify current requirements with their applicable Tennessee licensing board before adding Botox or dermal fillers to practice.
